5 water silos with Genadome PRO

At an arable farm in the province of North Holland, Genap, agricultural contractro Bervoets & Voogt and technical installer KaRo installed five water silos with GenaDome PRO covers. This was the first time KaRo had worked with this new type of cover. The project therefore provided valuable practical experience for future installations.

The water silos were required as part of the construction of a new barn. The client was required to temporarily store the resulting rainwater on site and discharge it at a controlled rate resulting in five relatively tall silos with a diameter of 8.80 metres, a height of 5.06 metres and a capacity of 308 m³. Together, the silos provide 1,540 m³ of storage for rainwater with sufficient capacity within the limited space available. Part of the collected water can also be used for drip irrigation on the farm.

A new cover in practice

Although a cover was not required for the rainwater storage function, the client wanted the silos to have a neat finish. They were therefore fitted with GenaDome PRO covers. These protect the stored water against dirt and other external influences while also giving the silos a clean, finished appearance.

For KaRo, this was the first installation of this new type of GenaDome. As a result, several practical considerations emerged during the preparation and installation. Precise measurements are particularly important because the cover is supported around the perimeter of the silo. Even a small variation in ground level can affect the fit. This requires particular attention on clay soil, where the ground may settle over time.

Accessibility around the silos also plays a role. For this project, the GenaDome PRO covers were installed using a telescopic handler, as sufficient space was available around the silos. If several silos are positioned close together or cannot be accessed from all sides, a mobile crane may be required.

Continuing development together

The experience gained during this first project will be used to further improve the preparation and installation of future GenaDome PRO covers. KaRo particularly appreciated Genap’s response when a practical issue arose: acting quickly and working together to find a suitable solution.

This trust stems from a partnership that has existed for several decades. KaRo supplies products and provides technical installations for tulip-forcing companies, seed companies and other horticultural businesses. For the installation of water silos, the company often works with a regular installation partner under KaRo’s supervision. The GenaDome PRO can now also become part of the projects they carry out together.

Working with a new product was not a concern for KaRo. Its confidence was based not only on the design, but also on both parties’ willingness to learn from the first installation. The five GenaDome PRO covers in the province of North Holland therefore provide both a neat finish for the water silos and a solid basis for future projects.
