Construction of reservoir, ditches, and trenches for sustainable strawberry cultivation in polytunnels
Wittenberg Gemüse in Germany aims to optimize and make its strawberry production more sustainable. Traditionally, they grow strawberries in greenhouses (18 ha), limiting them to two harvest seasons per year, with a production gap in June – precisely when demand is high. To bridge this gap, Wittenberg Gemüse has set up 5 hectares of polytunnels for strawberry cultivation using a gutter system. This enables them to supply strawberries from March to early December.
On behalf of Greenhouse Equipment, Genap has constructed a network of two ditches and 56 trenches, lined with Aquatex EX, and installed a 12,000 m³ water reservoir. This system collects rainwater from the tunnels, channels it to the reservoir, and stores it. As a result, the use of groundwater is minimized, contributing to the sustainability of the cultivation process.
"Thanks to this water storage system, we can now supply strawberries almost year-round and reduce our ecological footprint. We are proud of this sustainable step forward."
