Øresundsbron Tunnel Link Denmark-Sweden
The Øresund Tunnel, in combination with the Øresund Bridge, connects the Danish capital of Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden across the Øresund, a major waterway in Scandinavia. The construction of the tunnel/bridge began in 1995 and was completed in 2000. It not only shortened travel time between the two countries but also fostered economic and cultural exchange between Denmark and Sweden. The Øresund Bridge is an architectural and engineering marvel that has become an iconic symbol of the connection between Scandinavian countries.
At the time, Genap was consulted for expert advice regarding the implementation of a geomembrane construction for the approaches to the Øresund Tunnel. The challenge primarily involved seamlessly integrating the geomembrane construction with the concrete tunnel sections. To achieve this, an impressive length of 10 kilometers of embedment profile was used. Moreover, additional measures were required because one of the approaches crossed the approach path of Copenhagen’s airport. Ultimately, our advice resulted in an order for the supply and installation of 85,000m² of Genaseal LLDPE geomembrane, 10,000m² of expansion profile (a waterproof embedment profile to which the geomembrane was welded), and 6,000m² of drainage membrane.
